James Laughlin (1914-1997) began his publishing career as the literary editor of New Democracy, a magazine devoted to the economic theory Social Credit. Here Laughlin published Modern writers such as Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, and William Carlos Williams in a section of the magazine entitled "New Directions." In 1936, while in his Junior year at Harvard University, Laughlin gathered the best of these pieces and put them together in the first annual anthology, New Directions in Prose and Poetry....

Copper Canyon Press (CCP), a nonprofit publishing company, was founded in 1972 by Sam Hamill, poet and translator, and Holly (Tree) Swenson, book designer, in Denver, CO. In 1974 Hamill and Swenson relocated the company to Port Townsend, WA. They established the press to publish poetry exclusively, within the tradition of serious literary publishing. William B. Ewert (b. 1943) graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1965. Since 1970, he has been science consultant at the New Hampshire State Department of Education and was chair of the Friends of the UNH Library from 1975 until 1990. In 1984, he received the Granite State Award, given by the University for service to the state. Ewert's first publication was "Witness" in December 1978. From the description of William B.
